The hazards of electroshock and psychosurgery

Electroshock (ECT) and lobotomy (psychosurgery) exemplify the tendency of psychiatric practitioners to inflict brain damage on patients in the name of “treatment.”

Many people are surprised to learn that shock treatment is still widely used in the United States.  The subject is covered in a special section on the website but the most up-to-date and thorough discussion of ECT available is contained in an entire chapter on the subject in Brain-Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry (2008).

Some psychosurgical experiments continue in the United States but most were stopped as a result of lengthy, arduous campaign conducted by Dr. Breggin in the early 1970s.  This website contains the most information available on Dr. Breggin’s anti-psychosurgery campaign, including many of his articles.
